Use of till prompts, layout and CCTV

Electronic point of sale systems can be a significant help with underage sales prevention, prompting staff to employ the Challenge 25 policy, and also helping management to monitor how the policy is being applied in store.

Bear in mind when using electronic point of sale systems:

• EPoS systems do not replace staff awareness of how to prevent underage sales
• Make sure they are programmed correctly to include all the age restricted products on sale in the store
• If they are linked to CCTV make sure they are maintained and working effectively

Keep your age-restricted products where they can be monitored by staff. For example, fireworks stored on the shop floor must by law be kept in a secure cabinet. Train your staff to use and check the CCTV, keep them maintained and record these in your file.
