The supply of alcohol by or on behalf of a club
According to the Licensing Act 2003, clubs (not nightclubs) are establishments that serve their members that do not sell alcohol for profit. In qualifying clubs, alcohol demand is a separate licensing activity because technically members already own alcohol and so this is not a sale. A club premises certificate permits the following activities:
- the supply of alcohol to or on behalf of a club member;
- Sale of alcohol to a guest of one of the club members; and
- Organized entertainment for club members and their guests.
In order for a club to obtain a club premises certificate, it must:
- have at least 25 members.
- Not trade in alcoholic beverages, alcohol must not be supplied on the premises other than by the club.
- They should have elected members responsible for purchasing and supplying alcohol.
- No one should be allowed to generate income from the sale of alcoholic beverages.
- alcohol for the club must be purchased legally
The supply of alcohol under a club premises certificate is administered by an elected committee and does not require authorization by an appointed DPS or a personal licence holder.
