Preventing drug misuse
It is a fact that drug dealing takes place in a large percentage of licensed premises. The best run public houses are not immune to this problem. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 heavy penalties can be imposed on those who permit drug related activities to take place on their premises, including supplying and smoking cannabis.
Why should you be concerned?
- Damage to the trade or reputation
- The potential for other criminal activity, violence etc.
- Risk of losing your licence, career or business.
Prevention
To reduce the risk of illicit drug activity, licensed businesses can take some or all of the following steps: High standards of service and cleanliness are a powerful deterrent to drugs trade. This shows that you care about your venue and look after it and all who use it. Dealers will look forward for a poorly-kept venue, because if it is not looked after, then it is most likely not being monitored. high profile management will make them uncomfortable.
- Provide better lighting in dark corners or corridors, well-lit areas;
- Make sure all desks and client areas are visible to staff and managers;
- Employ Security Industry Association (SIA) registered door supervisors especially at peak times;
- Refuse to provide services to persons suspected of involvement in the sale or use of illicit drugs;
- Make sure you have good parking lots and outdoor lighting, and install security cameras;
- Establish, train and enforce a strict zero-tolerance policy against illicit drugs;
- Educate staff on drug awareness – particularly the types of behaviors that may be of significant drug relevance and items that may be required for drug use.
- Have a dress code that discourages drug wear, such as marijuana t-shirts;
- Be vigilant and watch out for strangely acting mobs or groups of people;
- Check all parts of the business frequently, especially toilet areas; and
- Check each night before closing the business for possible hidden drugs;
